There is no simple way to access a HP 3650 with Windows XP, if the printer is attached to cups server. But there is a way!

HP 3650

The HP 3650 is a cheap but good ink jet printer that has to be attached direct to a XP computer.

HP only delivers printer driver for a direct attached HP 3650! But the HP 3650 is supported by cups very well! So you can attach the printer to a cups server's USB port and use the printer remote. But while this works very well for Linux/BSD/Solaris and MacOS (remember: Apple also using cups as MacOS printer subsystem) you run into trouble with XP: no driver that supports a network attached HP 3560!

Install Adobe PostScript Driver

In a first step download a PostScript printer driver that supports remote printers: The generic Adobe PostScript driver from http://www.adobe.com will to that job! Then install the driver and point the printer location to your cups server, e.g. http://printserv.local:631/printers/hp3650.

In the next window you are ask to select the ppd file for your printer. You don't choose the default (defprtr2.ppd) of cause. Instead of that, you have to browse for the hp3650.ppd that you had copied from your cups server to your XP client, e.g. to C:\Temp\.

configure printer properties

Search for an nice color picture and open the print dialog for the newly created HP Deskjet printer. You will find a tab that will enable to choose between black and white and color printings!
